Spring cleaning your skincare routine with Gwen.

When going about your Spring cleaning this year, don’t forget to reassess your skincare routine! I even have some clients bring in their toiletry bags for me to help them figure out what to toss before we simplify their lives with an effective skincare and beauty regimen.

If you’re tackling it on your own this year, here are some of my top products to toss and what I recommend doing instead.

Happy cleaning!

Expired sunscreen

If your sunscreen has expired – toss it out!  Most formulas really aren’t effective after their expiration date so there’s no guarantee you’ll get the sun protection you need. Also, if you’ve let it roast in the glove compartment of your car for a few years, toss it now! Heat and humidity can cause the formula to separate and destabilize, rendering it ineffective at protecting you against sunburns, skin damage and the most dangerous – skin cancer. We can help you choose the perfect sunscreen for your skin this summer!

BB Cream

Many BB creams are too heavy and will clog pores, leading to breakouts. Many also aren’t oil-free, which can be a problem if your skin is already greasy and you’re looking to steer clear of breakouts and shine. I don’t recommend these for anyone, especially girls who have oily skin, are acne prone or have large pores.

Vitamin C that doesn’t work

Not all vitamin C serums are created equal.  There are different forms of topical vitamin C and a lot of ambiguous information out there. You may not only find products are ineffective but due to challenges with stabilizing the active component of vitamin C, l-ascorbic acid,  products could be harmful to your skin if a certain stage of oxidation sets in. If you have been using a C serum and not seeing results, it likely because the product doesn’t have an effective delivery system! A formula must contain a certain amount of ascorbic acid and the right pH range to be effective.  At Project Skin MD we’re proud to offer Skinceuticals C E Ferulic, the best on the market formulated under the Duke Antioxidant patent.  The Duke Antioxidant patent describes effective delivery of vitamin C to skin and protects the formulation used in SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic.  C E Ferulic features a combination of 15% pure vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid), 1% vitamin E (alpha tocopherol), and 0.5% ferulic acid.  The remainder of the ingredients are primarily carrier agents that ensure the antioxidants can be absorbed by your skin. There is no question when it comes to antioxidants and skin care, SkinCeuticals is the gold standard.  With their patents, they currently hold the master key. This is the best vitamin C serum available with many years of research to back up the claim.

Creams with mineral oil

Creams that have mineral oil can damage skins barrier and cause more dehydration. Plenty of classic beauty products feature mineral oil for its hydrating properties, but it actually has the opposite effect. It locks in moisture to heal dry, irritated skin and makes products feel silky-smooth and luxurious, but because of the barrier effect it has on skin, mineral oil can also clog pores, damage the skin barrier and increase water loss! Skinceuticals serums with hyaluronic acid are a great alternative to really quench your skin without clogging pores.

Apricot scrubs are best left to use on your feet

Many of us grew up using St.Ives Apricot Scrub, but a class action lawsuit recently filed claims that the popular scrub can damage skin and “is unfit to be sold or used as a facial scrub.” The plaintiffs claim the crushed walnut shells in the scrub can damage skin, and they balk at the use of “dermatologist tested” on the label. They allege that no dermatologist would recommend the scrub and believe the company should disclose that the scrub can cause microscopic tearing of the skin. My advice? Ditch it now! Look for gentle exfoliation through our Skinceuticals Retexturing Activator and Micro-Exfoliating Scrub.

Maybe people go into treatments thinking it’s a one shot  deal and that a single treatment will work miracles, when in fact multiple treatments will have cumulative benefits that are more long term. We are happy to review a long term plan with you in your consultation!
